Dutch Government to Ban Foreign Tourists from Amsterdam's Cannabis Coffee Shop

Amsterdam the city which is one of the favourite tourist spots in the world going to see some major changes in the law. The Dutch capital Amsterdam is going to witness a ban on foreign tourist from their world famous Cannabis Coffee shops. The city is also known as world's weed capital. The ban will possibly come into force in 2022 for foreign tourists.

The ban is pushed by Amsterdam's environmentalists mayor Felke Halsema and is also backed by local police officers and prosecuters, one report said. It is done to combat groing crime and drug trade.

The Dutch government data shows 58 percent tourists come to Amsterdam to consume cannabis. Soft drugs such as weed and hashish being illegal is thriving in Netherlands. The city where the population is nearly 9 lakhs, around 2 crore tourists visit anually and the number is expected to climb to 2.9 crore by 2025 according to Guardian report.

The city is also well known for its red light street which attracts more than 10 lakhs tourists every month according to Forbes. The reason behind this problem remains in history, in 1976 the Dutch law decriminalised the possession of drug under 5 grams . The hypocritic thing is Amsterdam hosts a "Cannabis Cup" , where the new weeds' varieties are awarded.

So, currently Amsterdam has 166 coffee shops where the cannabis has been sold. After the ban only residents will be allowed to enter and passport will be must to enter. And it can also be said that the govt. is trying to reduce overcrowding . But it does not mean Amsterdam will not be hospitable but govt. is trying to reduce such tourists who come only for cannabis. The city was hospitable and will be hospitable. It is a step to fight criminal activities.

Critics however said it will not stop selling of cannabis but it will make road for criminals to sell it in roads and corners and suburbs of the city which is more dangerous.
