Biggest FDI in Indian Railways to produce E- Locomotives

           






 What has happened ?

Indian Railways recently completed 5 years of awarding the contract to Alstom company for manufacturing of high-speed electric locomotives.
With the largest FDI project in the Indian Railways sector . India has now become the sixth country that can produce these high speed locomotives .


WHAT WAS THE CONTRACT?


Alstom in 2015 won the contract worth €3.5 billion (Rs.25,000 crore) from Indian Railways to provide 800 fully electric super-powered double-section locomotives of 12,000 HP capable of hauling ~6000 tonnes at a top speed of 120 kmph.


“The project will provide quite 10,000 job opportunities within the country. More than Rupees 2000 Crores has already been invested within the project by the corporate ,”
The first WAG 12B e-loco which was used  for commercial services in May 2020. The locomotive made its first commercial run between Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Station to Shivpur.


WHERE IT WILL BE DEPLOYED?

These high-speed locomotives are planned to be deployed for operations on major freight routes, including the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), These e-locos are transforming the heavy freight transportation landscape of India.

MANUFACTURING UNIT

A mutual contract formed between the Indian Railways, (26% equity) and Alstom (74% equity) to line up one among India’s largest integrated greenfield manufacturing facilities at Madhepura, Bihar. Spread across 250 acres, with a production capacity of 120 locomotives once a year , This industrial site is made to international standards of safety and quality.
